Andrew Tonnies

email Andrew, Development Coordinator

Andrew grew up as part of a large family in a small Nebraska town. Having been raised in the country, he learned to admire the subtle beauty of the landscape around him, gained a great appreciation of the outdoors, and developed a strong sense of belonging to the land on which he grew up. He attended college at Wayne State College in Northeast Nebraska, majoring in Social Science with a minor in Environmental Studies. While attending WSC he became involved in Habitat for Humanity and planned and participated in two building trips to Georgia and Arkansas. After graduating from college in 2004 he set out to explore his country and traveled over large parts of Western U.S.

He decided to attend graduate school in Australia because, as he told his mother, “It’s as far from home as I can get and not have to learn another language.” Not that he didn’t like his home, but he wanted to explore the world, which he hopes his mom understands. While living in Sydney, he attended Macquarie University, majored in International Relations, and became involved in a grant writing effort for an organization that helped refugees living in Australia. He also learned that sometimes an Australian accent is another language of its own. He graduated in 2008 and came home to Nebraska where he started volunteering for inCOMMON Community Development to help them with some of their grant writing efforts. In July of 2009 Andrew became part of the inCOMMON staff when he started working full time as the Development Coordinator. He is somewhat surprised to be living back in Nebraska, and is incredibly grateful for the chance to be a part of a community effort to affect positive change in individuals and the community as a whole.
