email Christian, Executive Director
Christian and Sonya Gray met while attending the University of Arizona (they found “chemistry” in chem lab!). Christian grew up in Southern California and received Jesus as Savior during his childhood years, but says he’s only come to begin experiencing the reality of Jesus as Lord in the dawn of his 30’s. Sonya, the daughter of an Army Sergeant, was raised around the world and became a believer in college as a result of the love and investment of friends who were involved with Campus Crusade for Christ (CCC). Both Christian and Sonya were actively involved with CCC in college and through their experiences with CCC God began to create a desire to serve in vocational missions.
On September 30, 1995 Sonya gave way Christian’s relentless pursuits and the two were married. They shared their honeymoon years in Huntington Beach, CA, spending their days working within the operations departments of two distribution companies. The Grays became three in 2000 with the addition of their beautiful daughter, Adina. In 2002 they reported to San Diego, CA to serve on the college campuses with CCC as a part of their campus Catalytic ministry team.
Through a number of domestic and international experiences during their first years with CCC, Christian and Sonya began to be drawn toward the lives of those in poverty around them. This inner transformation led to a vocational shift in 2004 with Word Made Flesh, as they pioneered the newly formed positions of U.S. Field Director and Hospitality Coordinator, respectively. This same year they celebrated the birth of their bouncing baby boy, Elliott.
Following the completion of their contract with Word Made Flesh in 2006, they accepted an opportunity to continue their service among those in need as community directors with inCOMMON Community Development. They continue to relish their participation within inCOMMON to this day, building relationships with those on the margins and cultivating supportive community networks throughout the city that participate in the holistic development of vulnerable populations and neighborhoods.
