On Tuesday, June 8th Film Streams and inCOMMON Community Development will present The End of Poverty? followed by a discussion with the audience and a panel of local community activists. The discussion will focus on global and local poverty, and community efforts to address the underlying issues of poverty in Omaha.
The End of Poverty? is a daring, thought-provoking and very timely documentary by award-winning filmmaker, Philippe Diaz, revealing that poverty is not an accident. It began with military conquest, slavery and colonization that resulted in the seizure of land, minerals and forced labor. Today, global poverty has reached new levels because of unfair debt, trade and tax policies — in other words, wealthy countries exploiting the weaknesses of poor, developing countries.
Please join us for this incredible film and discussion.

Neighbors United and inCOMMON Community Development recently received a pledge from the Peter Kiewit Foundation for $10,000 toward the creation of a Community Center in the Park Avenue area. This pledge comes with a need to raise $23,000 matching dollars by September 2010.
Creating a Community Center in the Park Avenue area is a collaborative vision between the local faith communities that formed Neighbors United. The initial planning between January and June 2008, identified hunger and food insecurity as some of the most pressing challenges facing the neighborhood. In addition, the faith community representatives identified the need to build social networks, provide mentoring and/or companionship, and give people tangible reasons for hope as central to developing the area.
“What makes the Community Center concept so power is that it emerged from the residents of the Park Avenue neighborhood themselves. We’re ecstatic to witness the community collaborating on such an important project – a project that will play a crucial role in the future health and growth of the Park Avenue neighborhood, namely because of its commitment to being led by the community itself.” – inCOMMON Executive Director, Christian Gray
Since its inception Neighbors United emphasized the importance of collaboration between residents, institutions, agencies, and organizations, in the neighborhood. In September 2008, Neighbors United began serving a free weekly meal in the neighborhood, which continues every Saturday from 11:00-1:30PM. Local faith communities and neighbors take turns cooking each Saturday. The Community Meal is an inclusive environment for neighbors to share a meal and their lives with one another.
“Through the weekly Community Meal (served inside First Baptist Church) neighbors receive a glimpse of what is possible when we spend time together and listen to one another. These weekly interactions foster solidarity and a shared dream for what is possible for our neighborhood.”- inCOMMON Neighborhood Advocate, Cait Caughey
Neighbors United envisions a Community Center in Park Avenue that will facilitate increased collaboration and building on support networks formed through the Community Meal. “Our priority with this Community Center is to get more neighbors around the table, and more voices present in the conversation about change.” says Gray.
During this time Neighbors United and inCOMMON Community Development are seeking additional funds for the Community Center. Any questions and/or interest in supporting this project can be sent to Christian Gray, 933-6672 or Christian@inCOMMONcd.org
