The 2009 movie “The Soloist” is a true story which explores the issues of homelessness and mental illness in America. The website Take Part is partnering with the film as part of a Social Action Campaign to focus on these issues. One of their educational pieces is this video which explores some myths and facts about homelessness.

Some facts about Homelessness in Omaha

  • 1,322: During the bi-annual point in time count conducted August 6, 2009, Metro Area Continuum of Care for the Homeless (MACCH)
    counted 1,322 people experiencing homelessness
  • 5%: This new point in time count reveals a five percent increase in people experiencing homelessness. (1,322 compared to 1,258 people counted January 29, 2009 and 1,263 people counted August 7, 2008)
  • 975: The number of individuals (as opposed to families) experiencing homelessness in Omaha is also increasing. The point in time count in August 2009 showed 975 individuals compared to 958 in January 2009. This increase is notable considering individuals who are homeless are more likely to seek temporary housing options in winter months as opposed to summer months.
