Elizea’s Story

Elizea is a 72-year-old woman of Mexican origin who has lived in the United States for more than 15 years. Like many immigrant parents, she made the painful decision to leave her children in Mexico in pursuit of a better quality of life and long-term stability for her family. Her journey has been defined by sacrifice, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to creating a better future for her children, even in the face of profound personal challenges.

In February 2025, Elizea enrolled in Citizenship classes as a critical step toward achieving stability and access to essential support systems. The process was especially difficult due to ongoing health issues that significantly affect her mobility. Walking is often extremely painful, limiting her ability to work and increasing her financial vulnerability.

Throughout her citizenship journey, Elizea received consistent, individualized support from inCOMMON staff and volunteers who helped her navigate each stage of preparation and ensured her learning experience was adapted to her physical limitations. This personalized assistance made it possible for Elizea to remain engaged, motivated, and confident, despite the barriers she faced.

Elizea remained deeply committed to preparing for the U.S. Citizenship test because she understood that citizenship could be a turning point in her life. For her, becoming a citizen meant opening the door to resources that could improve her health, stability, and overall quality of life.

On December 29, Elizea proudly took the Oath of Allegiance and received her Certificate of Naturalization, officially becoming a U.S. citizen.

As a newly naturalized citizen, Elizea is now eligible to apply for critical financial and medical assistance programs that were previously out of reach. These include healthcare coverage, disability-related supports, and other safety-net benefits designed to address her medical needs and strengthen her financial stability. Access to these resources will allow Elizea to better manage her health, reduce physical pain, and regain a greater sense of independence, while easing the economic strain caused by her limited ability to work.

Citizenship has also given Elizea long-term security and peace of mind, enabling her to focus on her health and family without constant uncertainty. Her story reflects the powerful impact of accessible citizenship education and individualized support, and how these services create pathways to dignity, stability, and lasting well-being for neighbors facing significant health and economic barriers.
