Community change often unfolds quietly over time. While programs create opportunities, their real impact is seen in how people grow and begin to invest in their neighborhoods.
That story began for the Lopez family with our Summer Soccer Club. In 2023, Jose, a fifth grader and soccer enthusiast, joined the seven-week program and quickly became a regular. When it ended, he wanted to stay involved and began attending inCOMMON’s weekly youth program – soon bringing his older brother, Juan, along.
In 2024, Jose encouraged Juan to apply for inCOMMON’s youth summer internship. Though naturally reserved, Juan thrived while helping host neighborhood events and connecting with community members. His growth and commitment led to Juan joining inCOMMON’s team as a part-time staff member.
Juan’s involvement also opened the door for their mother, Florinda, who began attending neighborhood cleanups and community meals and later enrolled in ESL classes in early 2025 with Jose’s support. Learning English is challenging for Florinda, who is fluent in Konjobal, but she is making steady progress. Today, the Lopez family is a consistent presence at neighborhood events. What began as a child’s love for soccer has grown into deep, multigenerational community engagement. In recognition of the Lopez’ contribution to their neighborhood, they were awarded the 2025 Park Avenue Neighborhood Hero trophy.
